Google Android-Powered Robot [VIDEO]

With $30, an Android tool, & a tiny creativity the pair could generate the cellbots which method commands by telnet on PCs. The bots can move around in specified directions thanks to the built-in compass functionally on positive Android phones.

Enterprising hobbyists Tim Heath & Ryan Hickman have created cellbots — with names like Tankbot & Truckbot — that are basically robots powered by Android devices.

While actual robot activity is minimal, the focus of the project was to utilize Android phones as the brains of the robots. The pair hope to expand robot functionality & make the most of Android’s program. Wired speculates that:

“This means they could utilize every hardware & program component of an Android phone, programming the bot to keep away from obstacles, recognize faces & voices, pinpoint its location & go places.”

Heath & Hickman have documented the entire project on their cellbots web-site, which means that with the right know-how you could generate your own Android-powered robot.

Watch a video of the robots with Android intelligence below:

New iPhone Will Have a Better Camera, Sensitive Back

Filed Under (tech news) by willowdan on 14-01-2010

The talk of the town at the moment is Apple Tablet, but we shouldn’t forget about its smaller cousin, the iPhone. Its current iteration, iPhone 3GS, was a relatively small evolutionary step compared to the 3G model, and one has to wonder what’s Apple preparing for the next version.

According to Goldman-Sachs’s Robert Chen, it won’t lack new features. “Apple’s going to put a lot of innovation, not just on the hardware, but also on the software of the new iPhone,” he said.

Precisely, this might mean a better camera (which is a very safe bet as far as predictions go), but also a sensitive back case, similar to the touch panel used for the Magic Mouse. A couple of days ago, Motorola introduced the Backflip, an AndroidAndroid smartphone which can be controlled via a touchpad on the back of the screen; dare we dream of something similar on the iPhone?

Apple, of course, doesn’t comment on “rumors and speculation”. But according to Chen, the new iPhone will go into production in April and should be available to consumers in June or July; just enough time for the rumor train to go into full speed.

Google Considers Pulling Out of China

Filed Under (tech news) by willowdan on 13-01-2010

In a lengthy blog post today, Google announced that it would no longer censor its Chinese search engine, even if it means pulling out of China entirely. This comes in the wake of a wide-ranging attack on its infrastructure targeting Chinese human rights activists.

Google China

In the post, Google outlined in rather striking detail a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack” that occurred last month, targeting around 20 companies. In its investigation, the search giant found that the attackers’ primary objective was accessing Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. It also found that dozens of other Gmail accounts owned by human rights activists worldwide were compromised, most likely due to phishing scams or malware.

Google wouldn’t say it, but implications are that the Chinese government had something to do with these attacks.

As a result of the attacks, Google has decided to reassess its presence in China. The Chinese government and Google have fought over censorship before, but currently the search engine does block certain results (such as images of the Tiananmen Square massacre).

Now Google’s making it clear that it won’t comply with China’s demands any longer. Here’s the key paragraph from the Google post:

“These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered–combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web–have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.”

Google has taken a very public stand against censorship, albeit one that is years overdue. How this series of events plays out could not only affect Google and the tech community, but global politics as a whole.

Nexus One a test of Google’s customer service

Filed Under (tech news) by willowdan on 09-01-2010

The launch of the Nexus One is giving Google’s approach to customer service a workout.

Problems with the Nexus One? Might be hard to get a hold of someone at Google.

(Credit: CNET)

Days after Google started selling the Nexus One exclusively through its Web site, IDG News Service noticed that Nexus One support forums were flooded with questions, complaints, and more than one rant about distribution and technical problems. It’s always hard to tell the size and scope of a problem from Internet message boards, but comments were flying in at an astonishing rate: almost one a minute around midday Pacific on Friday.

Much of the confusion stems from T-Mobile’s upgrade policies for existing customers, which makes it nearly impossible for current customers to get the $179 subsidized price of the Nexus One. But people are using the support forums for everything from questions about their eligibility to complaints about orders that have not been delivered as well as questions about error messages that appeared onscreen.

This could be a big problem for Google. Google wants to change the way people buy phones with its Nexus One strategy, hoping eventually to break the lock that wireless carriers have on customers with exclusive phones locked into multiyear contracts.

But Google’s approach to customer service is very automated, relying on user support forums, FAQs, and e-mail for more specific inquiries. That may work for free services like search and Gmail, but when people spend hundreds of dollars on a product they tend to expect a higher level of service. Even if that results in just another frustrating support call with a bored call center employee, it’s at least a neck to wring.

Of course, you don’t call Best Buy when your PC has a glitch, even if you bought it there. And even then, PC makers themselves are the ones who troubleshoot problems with Windows. But Google has invested a lot into branding the Nexus One as its own, even if all it really wants to do is be the software developer and retailer.

If demand for the Nexus One really takes off, Google might have to invest in customer support for the phone or try and convince its partners to pick up the slack, as they are currently doing by encouraging Nexus One customers to call T-Mobile or HTC. Those partners could be reluctant to do so indefinitely, since after all, Google is the one disrupting their business model.

As one poster put it, “Welcome to direct sales, Google!”
